You do not have to be in
your 20s, 30s, or 40s to reap the benefits of exercise and
fitness. Older, mature adults from 50 on can benefit from an
exercise fitness program. More and more, older adults are
beginning to get involved in regular exercise and fitness
programs.
The most popular exercise and fitness
activities for older adults are swimming and walking.
Swimming exercises every muscle in the body,
but is easy on the knees and joints. If you have problem with arthritis,
swimming may be a good exercise and fitness activity for
you. Local community adult schools sometimes sponsor
water-based calisthenics in their exercise and fitness
programs.
Walking is another good exercise and fitness
activity. Senior centers offer walking clubs for members. Brisk
walking is one of the best forms of exercise. Scenic walks or
walks through your neighborhood can prove to be interesting if
you vary your route. Mall walking is good during inclement
weather. You are inside with protection from the elements.
Diet plays an important part in an exercise
fitness part. A high fiber and low carbohydrate diet may work
for you. The carbohydrates should be from whole grains and
protein from more lean portions of meat to limit fat. This will
contribute to your overall health.
The generation known as the "baby boomers" is
now reaching retirement age. A great number have set themselves
apart from previous generations by watching their diet,
controlling their weight, and making exercise and fitness a
part of their lives. Medical science has made breakthroughs
with new procedures, medications, and treatment. This
generation will tend to live longer. For those who have made
exercise and fitness a part of their lives and continue to do
so, they will live longer and have healthier and happier
lives.
